Shropshire’s ‘oldest choir with the youngest membership’ promises an enjoyable evening’s entertainment with music by Mozart, Galuppi and a superb trumpet concerto by Hummel… at Shrewsbury Choral’s Autumn Concert.

Shrewsbury’s St Alkmund’s church is the venue for the October concert by Shrewsbury Choral, who will be performing Mozart’s Vespers; Galuppi’s – Dixit Dominus and Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto and Mass in D Op 111 Eb being performed by Andrew Farrow, trumpet soloist.  Dr Martin Cook will direct the choir on Saturday 19th October, at 7.30pm, with Shrewsbury Choral members being accompanied by the Shrewsbury Sinfonia led by Anne Tupling.

Jenny Worley, Chair of Shrewsbury Choral said: “The start of our new series of concerts offers a delightful experience for our audience, and as ‘the oldest choir with the youngest membership’ we promise an enjoyable evening’s entertainment for everyone with singing at the highest standard. We develop our choral repertoire by drawing inspiration from a wide variety of music styles, and the ambience of St Alkmund’s will provide the divine experience that will complement the divine music of the evening with Mozart’s Vespers a simply sublime masterpiece.

Austrian classical and early romantic composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel wrote his superb trumpet concerto in 1803; to mark his entrance into the court orchestra of Nikolaus II, Prince Esterházy as Haydn’s successor, and his composition is still most appreciated some 220 years after its first performance. Venetian composer Baldassare Galuppi spent approximately fifty years writing vocal music compositions and was one of the most widely performed opera composers of his day.

Tickets for the performance are available online now (shrewsburychoral.org.uk/buytickets), via www.shrewsburychoral.org.uk, or from Pengwern Books, Fish Street, Shrewsbury- 01743 232236; from choir members or on the door on the night.
