Lessons in Latin and Classics have been introduced at a prestigious Shropshire school after an enthusiastic response to introductory sessions earlier this year.

The classes will be taught to Year Five and Six pupils at Ellesmere College by subject specialist Sharon Gareh, who recently joined the teaching team and brings experience in introducing young pupils to classical languages, mythology and the roots of English vocabulary.

The school has also welcomed a new Computer Science teacher, Jason Ward, who will support digital learning across the College and help broaden the range of co-curricular activities on offer.

Shan Morgan, Head of Lower School, said: “Lower School is a vibrant place to be at the moment, we’re growing our team of subject specialists and creating even more opportunities for pupils to explore their interests.

“Languages play a key role in widening pupils’ understanding of how the world works – whether through vocabulary, stories or patterns of thinking – so expanding Latin and Classics felt like a natural step. The introductory lessons were incredibly popular and pupils have thrown themselves into speaking, translating and exploring the myths of the ancient world.”

Shan added that the Lower School model of having subject specialist teachers is often a pleasant surprise for families who visit during Open Events or Taster Days.

She said: “Not every school offers subject-specialist teaching in Key Stage Two. We do this because it helps children develop confidence, strong relationships and a genuine sense of curiosity in each subject.
“Our environment is warm, nurturing and personal, pupils are known as individuals and supported to make the most of the opportunities here.”

The Lower School includes pupils aged between seven and 13 (school years three to eight) and is also strengthening its focus on reading for pleasure, with a dedicated reading room and regular reading journal sessions forming an important part of the week.

As part of National Non-Fiction November, Key Stage Two teacher Simon Fisher created a ‘book blanket’ event, an inviting spread of books set out for pupils to explore.

Inspired by the Open University’s Reading for Pleasure community, the activity encouraged pupils to browse, discover and discuss books in a relaxed, low-pressure space.

This month’s book blanket featured titles by acclaimed author Nicola Davies, whose work blends science, storytelling and environmental themes.

Simon said: “This event is part of our wider commitment to building a strong reading culture across Lower School.

“By giving pupils time and space to explore high-quality children’s literature, we’re helping nurture curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.

“Nicola Davies’ books sparked some brilliant discussions and really captured the pupils’ imaginations.”
