A special event to celebrate the Chinese New Year at a stately home on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border has been hailed a great success.

Weston Park teamed up with Telford-based CultureKind Chinese Community to deliver a week of activities across the estate, culminating in a spectacular lantern parade.

Schoolchildren, community groups, Weston volunteers and visitors took part in a series of workshops to create their own Chinese lanterns which then took pride of place during a ‘Follow the Lion’ nighttime parade at the end of the week.

The procession was led by Weston Park’s curator and head of learning Gareth Williams, who donned a lion’s head for the event. It followed a route around the front of the house which was then illuminated with the Chinese lanterns on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Gareth Williams said: ”We had a fabulous week celebrating Chinese New Year for the very first time at Weston Park with the help and support of the CultureKind Chinese Community.

“From lantern making to our colourful parade and spectacular evening house viewings which were lit by lanterns, we’ve all had so much fun and we would like to thank the CultureKind Chinese Community for celebrating Chinese New Year with us.”

Grace Tong, from the CultureKind Chinese Community, said: “We had a fantastic time at Weston Park. Seeing the lanterns in the house looked beautiful and it really was an extraordinary experience to be a part of. We would like to thank the team at Weston Park for all of their support.”
