This February an arts charity in Shrewsbury town centre are offering a creative way to celebrate Charles Darwin and his contributions to the science of evolution. The Hive is just one organisation taking part in the DarwIN Shrewsbury Festival this year. Children aged 4 to 14 years are encouraged to take part in a pottery workshop, where they can engineer their own honeycomb tile accompanied by a glazed bee.
Events and Projects Manager Olivia Hames explains what inspired this activity; ‘Charles Darwin was fascinated with bees and their construction of beautiful, yet complex honeycombs. We wanted to give participants the opportunity to create a piece of pottery to commemorate this. Once their pieces have been fired in the kiln they can collect them from The Hive and display them at home’
This pottery workshop will take place at The Hive on Saturday 12th February between 3-4.30pm and is happening in partnership with Shrewsbury BID. Tickets are £10 for a child, with an additional sibling receiving a discounted ticket at £8. Bookings can be made in person at The Hive box office which is open Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 4.30pm, by calling 01743 234970 or visiting hiveonline.org.uk. This is just one in a series of events celebrating Shrewsbury’s most famous son. The DarwIN Shrewsbury Festival 2022 will take place across the town centre from 7th – 13th February 2022.
